2004 AnimeFEST
The Adventure

Sunday

Friday

I got to leave the office at 3pm. I ran to the bank then sat in traffic on the highway for an hour to get INTO Dallas. Found close parking, got my ticket, but it pisses me off they only had Friday to Saturday afternoon schedules ready.

Walked around a bit. Checked out the mostly empty dealer's room and ended up talking to quite a few vendors for long periods of time.

I got an orange Saiyuki pillbox because I liked how 'innocent' the boys looked on the cover. I talked to the vendor about ALL the different stuff the Japanese come up with for collectables. Just some of the stuff the vendor had were more pill boxes, phone straps, calculators, mirrors, art cards, pouches, pens and dangle charms.

Bought a Kumagorou hat for winter from the Genki Gang folks. (www.genkigang.com) I told them I had seen their website and we talked a bit. Some guy walked up and asked the price of their hats. He did not like the answer ($30) and left. I made a comment to the vendors about people who come to a con and expect things for free. We discussed how much time and effort goes into each one of the hats, the high quality of the fabrics and how they are sewn one at a time by one of the ladies and not mass-produced.

Got a black teeshirt that has a blue bishie, pink flower petals flowing around and the word YAOI on it. Another vendor had shirts with I HEART Yaoi but the shirts were French-cut and TINY in size so they would fit a kid or someone REALLY skinny. I thought about Talon's little girl but I did not think her husband would appreciate her daughter walking around wearing that shirt.

Decided NOT to purchase any of the teeshirts, etc. offered by AnimeFEST this year. I just get tired of having GIRLS as the graphics on all these things. The artwork in general was not that special, either. Different art is used for the various types of badges and of the ones I saw, all of them were of women. I guess I need to design some kind of original bishie chara for stuff like this and enter those contests.

Got a new small black Myth bag (more like a purse) with red embroidery 'I Heart Yaoi'.

The guy who did the Gravi pic I got at a-kon hinted he might be putting out some other stuff during this show. His partner is the one who has the yaoi doujin booth I saw a a-kon. Of course, Again, I had ALL the Gravi doujin they had in their yaoi boxes since all they had were the Remixes. They had only a few DBZ ones, and I already own copies of them all.

Talked to my friends at Celtic Chrystal and got the pair of earrings that had been calling me since that one-day mini-con at the mall last month.

Saturday

Dropped the roll of quarters I got in case I had to park in the parking from hell on my big toe.

Got some local Japanese snack sources cards/websites. I am hoping something can be set up for the anime club.

Took pictures. Missed some because I was still getting used to the camera. The pic that was supposed to be Tohma came out as a photo of the carpet. I have as yet to get a pic of Tohma, the little bastard. More pics blurred and I threw some of them away immediately. I know I have to hold the damned thing and wait for it to make decisions before shooting, blegh. I REALLY prefer a traditional and fully UN-automatic SLR camera. However, it WAS nice to be able to show the pics to the posers immediately.

Lots of little girls were dressed as Shuichi. I got glomped by these girls because of my Gravi shirt. My chest got pointed at a lot as well, with squeals shortly after. Our fandom grows...

Had to recharge camera battery twice, grrr...

Had to find an outlet to charge the battery and finally found one over by the tower entrance. While waiting for the battery to charge, I called Talon and left a message. Then I called the VP of the anime club because he was supposed to be somewhere there, but got his answering machine. Talked a little Japanese to the phone, which got me looked at funny by the elderly lady sitting in the chair close to me. Then I called Spiritmother but even the answering machine did not pick up. No one was around, it seemed.

Ran into the World Lit/anime teacher a few times during the day. It was nice to be in the company of folks my age who were otakus like me.

Sunday

I saw no line to get tickets. rat could have gotten his own.

Not much cosplay about, even though the contest was Sunday night. Pretty slow day all around.

I was able to catch Tohma again, though, and the pic turned out.

We went to a character development panel for web comics done by Aaron and Chris from SquirrelWorks, but the info was valid for anyone wishing to build characters for cartoons or writing. I was wishing some of the muse meet folks were with me.

Ran into 'the Shu girls' outside the main restroom and talked with them for a while. One was back in her Shu costume while one was Koenma Jr and yet another wanted to get into a costume but she did not have a hotel room key to do it and she could not find the folks who had the key.

Took rat to see eps 11 & 12 of "Naruto" since he had not seen any of it before but he was seeing a lot of the headbands at the con. Sure was nice hearing Kazuhiko Inoue as Kakashi, even though visions of Yuki Eiri kept popping through my brain. I do adore that delightfully sexy voice!

We ended up leaving at 3pm, going to Black-eyed Pea for an early dinner then getting home and falling asleep for a few hours, waking up about 8pm.

Worked on the Saturday pics for the website.

Monday

We got there about 10:30am.

Hardly any cosplay or panels on Monday, which was disappointing. It was even slower than Sunday, which was pretty damned slow.

rat had run off at one point to see some anime. He caught up with me a little later and wanted me to see the anime in question so we went to the video room and watched two eps of an anime called "Girls Bravo". Really funny, silly stuff and definitely a guy's anime with all the bouncy tits, so I found it hilarious. Ryotaro Okiayu, who voices K in "Gravitation" and Dark in "DNAngel", does Kazuharu Fukuyama in this anime, a girl-crazy rich guy who loves to have his female staff dressed up in skimpy costumes and has the air conditioning set up in his mansion so when it comes on it blows their skirts up.

Checked out the dealer's room a few more times. Picked up one more bottle of that yummy strawberry soda, Ichigo Soda.

Picked up some celtic knot earrings at Celtic Chrystal and also got some earrings for the main boss for Xmas.

Took pics of the few cosplayers and some of the vendors I had talked to over the course of the weekend.

Left about 1:30pm.

Stopped by Krispy Kreem for some donuts on the way home.

Both of us went to bed when we got home and slept until about 6pm. We are such geezers.

Wrap-Up

I did not realize animeFEST was actually geared for family, until one of the anime club members who worked security this year told me that was the case. That explains the lack of hentai and yaoi nights in the video rooms, the large amount of younger fans running about and their harried-looking parents sitting at the tables, surrounded by swag bags.

I missed some nice costumes because I would see them dash by and would think I would see them again later to grab a picture. It did not happen like I thought, though. I noticed some people had more than one costume and they would change during the day. Some people changed up to three times during the day and did so throughout the weekend.
